7. How long does it take to lab-grow a gemstone once?
In fact, for most of the gemstone varieties we cultivate, we have to wait for almost a year! The crystals grow slowly on the seeds, maintaining their natural crystal shape. At the end of this process, you get crystals that are identical to the rough stones found in nature, including their physical, chemical, and optical properties. Every time we open a crucible that hasn't been touched for ten months, we are filled with amazement. Sometimes, though, it also leaves us greatly disappointed. We are constantly experimenting, making subtle changes to improve the quality of the crystals. Continuous experimentation is key to sustained innovation. What's more, many of the lab-grown gemstones are unusable—on average, we lose 80-90% of the gemstones simply because of inclusions that are revealed during cutting. This is a natural part of the crystal growth process. We also have to sacrifice some crystals to use as seeds for the next round of growth.
